Die Republik Südafrika ist mittlerweile auch zu einer weiteren Wirtschaftsmacht herangewachsen. Und gerade für den Übersetzer- und Dolmetschermarkt ist dieses Land sehr interessant. Wussten Sie eigentlich, dass Südafrika seit dem Ende der Apartheid elf amtliche Landessprachen, neben Englisch und Afrikaans zum Beispiel isiZulu, Sesotho und Tshivenda, besitzt? Das Land ist damit hinter Indien und Bolivien dasjenige mit den meisten offiziellen Sprachen der Welt. Entsprechend gibt es elf unterschiedliche offizielle Landesnamen. Etwa 0,7 % der Schwarzen und 59,1 % der Weißen sprechen Afrikaans als Muttersprache. Englisch wird von 0,5 % aller Schwarzen und von 39,3 % der Weißen zu Hause gesprochen.
Die restlichen Sprachen werden von der schwarzen Bantu-Bevölkerung als Muttersprache gesprochen. Viele weiße Südafrikaner sprechen außerdem andere europäische Sprachen, wie Portugiesisch, Griechisch und sogar Deutsch. Obwohl jede der elf Sprachen als Amtssprache gilt und laut Gesetz alle Sprachen als gleich anzuerkennen sind, bildet sich die englische Sprache als führend heraus, da sie im Land über die unterschiedlichen Volksgruppen hinaus von den meisten Menschen verstanden wird und nicht unmittelbar mit dem ehemaligen Apartheidsregime verknüpft ist. This year, Lingua-World made the leap across the ocean to Africa and opened another and, fittingly, its fifteenth office in Johannesburg in perfect timing with the company’s fifteenth anniversary. So why South Africa, you may ask? We got to know this area of Africa even before it hosted the Football World Cup in 2010 and it wasn’t long until it had won a special place in our hearts.
The Republic of South Africa has now also evolved into another of the world’s economic powers and is an extremely interesting country for the translation and interpreting market in particular. Did you know, for example, that South Africa has had eleven national languages, including isiZulu, Sesotho and Tshivenda alongside English and Afrikaans, since the end of apartheid? In fact, only India and Bolivia are above South Africa in the list of the world’s countries with the largest number of official languages. There are therefore also eleven different official names for the country of South Africa. Around 0.7% of black people and 59.1% of white people in South Africa speak Afrikaans as their native language. 0.5% of all of the country’s black citizens and 39.3% of its white citizens speak English in the home.
South Africa’s other official languages are the native languages of its black Bantu population. A large number of white South Africans additionally speak other European languages such as Portuguese, Greek and even German. Although every one of South Africa’s eleven national languages is considered to be an official language and they should therefore also be recognised as equal, English has taken on a leading role because it is the language that most of the people in the country’s different ethnic groups are able to understand and it is not directly linked to the former apartheid regime.
