Die arabischen Sprachvarianten

Auch die arabischen Sprachen sind mannigfaltig: Schätzungsweise wird Arabisch von 320 Millionen Menschen als Muttersprache und von weiteren 60 Millionen als Zweitsprache gesprochen. Varianten des Arabischen werden insgesamt von etwa 370 Millionen Menschen gesprochen. Die arabische Sprache im weiteren Sinne umfasst eine Vielzahl von verschiedenen Sprachformen, die in den letzten anderthalb Jahrtausenden gesprochen wurden und immer noch werden. Was all diese Sprachformen zu einer Sprache verbindet, ist die Religion, vor allem der Islam und speziell der Koran.

Aufgrund ihrer weiten Verbreitung sind die arabischen Sprachen für Lingua-World und den Übersetzungsmarkt in diversen Sprachkombinationen natürlich von großem Interesse. Direkte Übersetzungen von der deutschen in die arabische Sprache oder umgekehrt sind allerdings eher selten. Meistens geht man bei Arabisch eher den Umweg über Deutsch-Französisch, Französisch- Arabisch oder Deutsch-Englisch und dann Englisch-Arabisch. Übertragungen ins Arabische erfolgen daher aus dem Englischen und Französischen, oft aus dem Spanischen, sowie, zur Zeit der Sowjetunion, aus dem Russischen. Selten sind Übertragungen aus anderen europäischen Sprachen oder aus dem Japanischen, Chinesischen, Persischen, Türkischen und Hebräischen. Die Palette der Geschäftskunden von Lingua-World ist, aufgrund der vielen Sprachkombinationen, auch sehr bunt. So werden gerade im Bereich des Marketing-Übersetzungen angefordert oder auch Infobroschüren zu diversen Produkten.

Funkelnder Übersetzungsauftrag

Und – passend zur Weihnachtszeit – möchten wir jetzt noch von einem „funkelnden“ Auftrag berichten. So hat ein Unternehmen eine Sonderedition des „Silver Cloud“, einer aus dem Jahre 1960 stammenden Luxuslimousine von „Rolls Royce“, hergestellt, die über und über mit den edlen Swarovski-Steinen besetzt ist.

Sechs Künstler haben drei Jahre lang ca. 1 Million Swarovski Steine auf den Wagen geklebt (healthcare-convention.com). The Arabian Peninsula – A Resplendent World of Glitter and Glamour

This blog entry is the last in our series of articles on „The World in 20 Lines“, which we hope has given you a deeper insight into some of the countries and languages that we encounter in our day-to-day work here at Lingua-World. Today we would like to shine the spotlight on the Arabic language, where the first challenge is dealing with the fact that the land of Arabia no longer actually exists as a separate country. As you may recall, there is even a film entitled „Lawrence of Arabia“, but the concept of Arabia as a single nation is actually false, which is why people tend to refer to the Arab world or Arabian Peninsula when talking about Arab countries. The largest nation on the Arabian Peninsula is Saudi Arabia, but countries such as Egypt, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Syria, Israel, Iran and Iraq are also part of the Arab world.

The Arabic Languages

As well as containing a wide variety of countries, the Arabian Peninsula is also home to a diverse range of Arabic languages. In fact, it is estimated that over 320 million people speak Arabic as their native language and another 60 million individuals speak it as their second language. A total of approximately 370 million people speak the different varieties of Arabic. The concept of „the Arabic language“ actually refers to a multitude of different forms of speech that were spoken in the last one and a half millennia and are still spoken today. These forms of speech are all connected by one thing, namely religion, above all Islam and the Quran in particular.

The fact that the Arabic languages are spread across a wide variety of countries means that they are, of course, extremely interesting for Lingua-World and the translation market in general in a diverse range of language combinations. Direct translations from German into Arabic or vice-versa are, in fact, actually quite rare and translations involving Arabic tend to involve translations from German into French and then French into Arabic or German into English and then English into Arabic. As these examples show, translations into Arabic normally come from English or French source texts, although Spanish source texts are also often used, as were Russian texts during the era of the Soviet Union. Translations from other European languages or from Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew, on the other hand, are rare. This wide variety of language combinations means that Lingua-World also deals with a diverse selection of different business clients. Our translations are particularly in demand in the field of marketing and for information brochures for a multitude of different products.

A Sparkling Translation Order

Given that Christmas is just around the corner, we would also like to tell you about one of our ‚resplendent‘ translation orders. The story began when a company decided to manufacture a special edition of the „Silver Cloud“, a luxury „Rolls Royce“ limousine that dates back to 1960, that was absolutely covered in elegant Swarovski crystals.

While six artists spent a total of three years sticking approximately 1 million Swarovski crystals onto the car. Lingua-World was asked to translate the information brochure for the limousine from English into Arabic.
